One professor speaking to another, “The doctors want to have her head examined.” why questioned the other professor. “Why a girl from Marion County wants to be a German major.” This joke in my presence and at my expense propelled me to excel and finish my degree. Marion County , SC USA is a poor manufacturing city with high drop out rates, unemployment, and teen pregnancy. I graduated from high school, college , and studied in Germany. It doesn’t matter how you start but how you finish. Your dreams are not confined by race, social class or economic status. Your aspirations  transcend every category if you dare to dream outside the box.
